Getting Correct Fit by Measuring Flatbelt

Check out our handy video guide - if you measure the flatbelt of an item which fits you well and compare to our flatbelt, you should get a correct fit.

Molecule Women's Sizing Guide

Please pay particular attention to the Flatbelt measurement.

To measure the flatbelt:

  • we lay the clothing flat on the ground, front button topside
  • lightly stretch it out, so that the button is about 2" below the top of the garment-rear (this is how it should naturally sit)
  • we then measure across the very top of the garment
  • (See the image below)

If you do the same with similar style clothes you have, the waist fit should be good.

To get our Waist measurement, we double the Flatbelt and then take 3" off. Eg. if double the Flatbelt is 36", we will say the Waist is 33". This is the same as all manufacturers, but the amount taken off varies between manufacturers, models, and even years - which is why we provide the Flatbelt measurement as well. The Waist measurement will usually match the tags on other hipster-style clothing you may have.

To get our Hip measurement, we lay the item flat on the ground, measure across the widest part of the hip area, usually a few inches below the belt, and then double it. This mens that if the widest part of your legs are wider than your hips (sometimes referred to as 'lower hips'), you should order your clothing with a quoted Hip at least as big as your 'lower hips'. Ie. the widest part of your clothing needs to be at least as wide as the widest part of you :)

If you find that using our measurement system you are an XL where you would normally be a Small, please don't worry! This is quite normal : please remember these are designed in Thailand for Asian bodies - you will still fit, but in a larger tag size. This doesn't mean you've suddenly put on the pounds! Please read the product descriptions carefully as they have product-specific sizing information.

Most women will wear our clothes just above the hip, and way below the 'natural waist'.
*If you measure your waist along the 'natural waistline' this will *not* match our 'waist' measurements!*

If you measure yourself 1-3 inches above your hips, or where you normally have hipster-style clothes hang (the Beltline), this would normally be the-same-as, or less-than, the Waist measurement for your Molecules.

For the best fit, please check the 'Front rise' and 'Back rise' on our women's clothing. This is measured from the crotch-seam, along the fabric to the top. This is the best way of making sure that your bum will fit into the clothes! We recommend measuring the front and back rise on similar items that you have.

Molecule Men's Sizing Guide

Our men's cargo shorts and pants are designed to be worn as you usually wear your boardshorts or pants. The men's sizes are fairly flexible - if you really want to wear the waist 'up' you can, but most people will find them more comfortable worn with the beltline around the hips.

To get our Men's Waist measurement, we double the Flatbelt and then take 1" off. Eg. if double the Flatbelt is 36", we will say the Waist is 35". All manufacturers do this (ie. allow some 'give' in the actual waist-fit), but the amount taken off varies between manufacturers, models, and even years - which is why we provide the Flatbelt measurement as well. The Waist measurement will usually match the tags on other similar clothing that you own.

While all our men's styles are a loose fit, some are baggier than others, please see the product descriptions for more details.

Bear in mind that most models (please see product pages for details) have waist adjusters, as well as belt loops. You can always tighten up a slightly loose pair, but you cannot 'make loose' a tight pair! Please also be aware that the flatbelt may vary by around half an inch due to normal manufacturing variations.
